The rehabilitation of several metro and RER stations in the Ile-de-France transport network aimed to reduce noise pollution in the entrance halls and platforms related to traffic and human activities. This rehabilitation was also an opportunity to guide access to the network for visually impaired people (PRM) as part of the EQUISENS experiment.

Methodology

The acoustic firm Tisseyre + Associés has developed a joint working methodology with the architect. Indeed, we start from the observation that the architecture of a space is fundamental for its future sound environment in the state of use. This is why we have developed a digital tool for 3D modeling of spaces in operation: Intelligibility®. Essential work support for the close collaboration with the architects, it allows to work upstream on the soundscape of a space in operation. However, this approach is particularly relevant in the work on the accessibility of persons with reduced mobility. Indeed, without deep reflection on the quality of a space's soundscape, the sound signals sent to make metro and RER stations accessible to visually impaired people not only risk being unintelligible for these people but also causing nuisance for the vicinity of the stations (external access).

Thanks to Intelligibility®, we were able to work together with the architect right from the design stage for the rehabilitation of the stations in order to integrate the acoustic treatments into the interior layout of the station in order to create coherent and balanced sound atmospheres according to the different station spaces

Tailor-made acoustic solutions for accessibility to stations with reduced mobility

As previously explained, the sound environment of the stations in operation must imperatively be worked on before any acoustic solutions aimed at improving accessibility for the visually impaired. Indeed, the best sound indicators are the “natural” indicators, those that already exist. In a metro or RER station, these are the ticket validation terminals as well as the noises of arrival or departure of metros from the platform. It is therefore necessary to maintain these sound signals while ensuring that the directive system via loudspeaker in the corridors remains intelligible.

  • Reuilly-Diderot station: We have installed an acoustic device in the ticket hall (associated with sound guidance with beacons) and in the connecting corridor
  • Nanterre station – Prefecture: We have installed an acoustic device in the ticket hall (associated with sound guidance with beacons) and on platform 1 to optimize intelligibility.
